The development of reinforced concrete structure is continuously studied to improve the strength, ductility, and durability of the members. In high risk earthquake area like in Aceh Indonesia, the ductile members of building structures are needed to reduce the loss of property and live. Therefore the study about ductility of reinforced concrete members is still very important. In this research, the reinforced concrete beams with stirrup were tested to study the effect of arrangement of compression reinforcement on ductility of
concrete members. To achieve the above objective, six reinforced concrete beams with different arrangement of compression reinforcement were tested at Structure and Material Laboratory of Civil Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering , Syiah Kuala University. The specimens have same size of 2200 mm in length and cross section of 200 mm width and 300 mm depth. Deformed steel bar of 12, 14, and 16 mm in diameter were used to compreSSion bars and deformed bar of 19 mm in diameter was used to
tension reinforcement. Ordinary bar of 10 mm in diameter was used to stirrup. The symmetric loading system of 700 mm constant shear span at the both end and 600 mm distance between two point loads was adopted, so as to ensure the flexural failure in the mid span area of RC beam. The load was applied monotonically from zero to failure. Test results showed that the more close compression reinforcement resulted in an increase
the ductility of members, which the stirrup spacing affected also. Beam specimen failure modes were the flexural failure. The main flexural cracks were located at the face of pure bending area between two point loads.
