The durability of concrete structures is a complex function of a number of parameters, which influence the serviceable durable life in a variety of manner and extent. The durability 0 f concrete structures must not betaken for granted while designing for strength and serviceability. In this paper the outline of a proposed method for durability design of concrete structures is presented. The formulation is based on a durability design index, DOl, which is an empirical factor evolved from the durability requirements of the commonly used codes of concrete construction like ACI, BS, CLlJSCE. The 001 is function of the product of assumed durability factors an few influence factors. While proposing the method different weight factors have been
assigned to the various durability effectors. The durability design loading has been categorized as the environment, displacements and deformation, reinforcement detailing, concrete cover, construction method, concrete protection practice & maintenance standards. Two more durability design criteria were proposed as the concrete composition and mixture proportioning. An influence factor was related to the level of design and construction monitoring and a certainty factor was related to the quality of concrete. The results of case studies agreed very closely to the prediction of the proposed method
