The most used material for formulation of plasticizers and superplasticizers for
concrete is lignosulphonate. A new lignosulphonate with superplasticizer
performance has been developed. The results of an extensive test program of the
new lignosulphonate are reported in this paper. The tests were carried out using
different cements and included fly ash and silica fume.
It was possible to achieve water reduction of 20 % and more with the new
The new lignosulphonate is compatible and can be used with cements containing fly
ash and silica fume.
There was no significant difference between the different cement clinkers in dosage
of the new lignosulphonate needed at 15 % water reduction. 30 % fly ash inclusion
reduces the lignosulphonate dosage needed at 15 % water reduction.
Increasing amount of fly ash caused increased workability. Depending on the clinker
there was an optimum fly ash content. There was no optimum fly ash content found
with one of the cement clinker; the workability was increasing with increasing fly ash
content. There was no effect of silica fume addition on workability at wlc equal to
0.41. Silica fume addition was reducing the workability at wlc equal or greater than
The set time was increasing with increasing w/c. Inclusion of fly ash was increasing
the set time. Silica fume addition was shortening the set time.
