Restoration of Structures using External Post Tensioning Techniques
The use and advantages of Post Tensioning are very well known in the
Civil Industry and is being used for past 40 to 50 years. Post tensioning is one of
the best methods to induce stresses in the concrete before application of Live
load and this technique can also be widely used for Restoration of Structures.
Unlike the use of Post-Tensioning in new structures there are no definite methods
or codes for application in Restoration of Structures. For restoration of
structures, we need to improvise the PT technique in combination with other
techniques and materials available. Therefore our imagination is our limitation.
This paper deals with case studies of such applications in Restoration of
Structures. Some the main case studies include:
a) Removal of alternate columns in a 5 floor structure to increase the
column spacing from 4.0 m to 8.0 m by strengthening the beam using
external post tensioning & Micro Concrete Encasement.
b) Strengthening of Pile caps to increase their load carrying capacity by
introducing post tensioned beams.
c) Restoration of a failed single span bridge by Micro concrete
encasement and post tensioning. Job carried out in very short time of
15 days and traffic opened.
d) Use of PE coated High Tensile strands to stabilize unstable rock slopes
(formed due to irregular blasting carried out for hill road widening) at a
Temple. The job was carried out in very short time before a major
festival at the temple. Job was appreciated for it being simple, effective,
innovative and minimum risk in execution
