The main aspects regarding structural design are discussed taking into
account the three basic structural prerequisites concerning capacity, durability and
robustness. The possibility of proceeding for the first two by following the
prescriptions of the Codes, at the interior of the frame outlined by the probabilistic or semiprobabilistic method, is firstly enlightened. Then referring to robustness, its
strict connection with the approach governing conceptual design is pointed out.
Some case studies will be finally illustrated, underlining the importance of robustness in ensuring a reliable structural behavior.
