The 14th International Conference cum Workshop onConference Chairman's Introduction
INSPECTION, APPRAISAL, REPAIRS & MAINTENANCE OF STRUCTURES
(including Rehabilitation, Strengthening & Retrofitting)
25-26 April 2018, Singapore
Regular maintenance and upkeep of buildings and infrastructure is as important as the quality of original construction to ensure their continued serviceability over time. Advances in the fields of material science, structural analysis & design, computer applications and construction technology have led to development of leaner, taller, stronger, and more sustainable modern structures with improved quality & performance parameters. Complex structures are being built in shorter periods of time increasing likelihood of occurrence of mistakes and oversights at planning, design, or construction stages. Lack of understanding of the key concepts and components at design stage may also affect the performance of structures during service, which is evident from distress noticed in relatively new constructions. Durability & long-term serviceability of structures also depends on service & environmental exposure conditions, as well as maintenance and upkeep regime. Buildings and infrastructure undergo regular wear and tear due to sustained or repetitive loads. Aggressive environmental exposure conditions may cause deterioration or degradation of structure leading to loss in its capacity. Need for upgrading, strengthening or protection may arise when structures are subjected to such severe service conditions.
RB series of international conferences have effectively addressed variety of issues related to inspection, investigation, maintenance, repair and rehabilitation of structures in several countries, spanning across three continents, in the past three decades. RB18 returns to Singapore in April 2018 after 13 successful runs overseas and will once again bring together local & overseas researchers, industry professionals & experts, facility managers, end users & Authorities to share their research, knowhow and experience in the field for the benefit of all.
It is my honour and privilege to invite all the stakeholders including researchers, designers, material scientists, repair & rehabilitation contractors, inspection & maintenance engineers, facility managers, structural forensic experts, testing laboratories, and Authorities to participate in this conference for mutual benefit and learning.
